It’s a well-known fact that personal narratives can deeply impact our lives. If our narrative is full of negative beliefs, it’s almost impossible to achieve the sort of success and fulfillment we desire. On the other hand, telling ourselves empowering stories which inspire, can open our minds to new possibilities, helping us reach our full potential.
The first step to changing your story is becoming aware of the stories you tell yourself. We must dare to look deeper so that we can discover the secret messages that are still buried within us.
In “The Hiding Place” Corrie ten Boom relates there was one central core of healing for all those coming from World War II prison camps. She states, “And for all the people alike, the key to healing turned out to be the same. Each had a hurt he had to forgive…” And so it is with many of us, we must recognize our past traumas and its impact on the stories we tell ourselves. The key to healing our past will be forgiveness and reconciliation with those who have betrayed our trust, and to be forgiven by those whose trust we have betrayed.
The next step is developing a new more empowering story. This doesn’t mean erasing your past, or pretending it didn’t happen. New stories come with reconciling the events of your past. In other words, our past stories have value when viewed from the right perspective. Defining and reconciling the events of your life, helps you come to terms with the whole truth! For as the saying goes, “bones are stronger after they are broken.”
Finally, practice telling a new story. Although initially telling new stories can be challenging, especially if you’ve been telling yourself the same thing for a number of years. However, the old adage says, practice makes perfect!
Since we were created to connect with others, telling your story is a powerful way to connect and inspire others to reach their full potential. Just remember, when sharing your story, be honest, sharing your messes and your successes.
